Barns

I love old wooden barns.  Slumped ridges, tilted doors, and abandoned
stalls all speak of by-gone times.  

No matter how much I look at square and level pole

buildings, they don't excite me.  Old barns have character, belong to
landscapes and make fascinating drawing and painting subjects.

I paint barns as I would portraits, trying to capture how they were
built and weathered.  For the most part barns look to me like old
people, forgotten, not used much.  Their boards are split or missing.
Weeds grow around them.  Pigeons roost in their lofts.  They represent
our human presence on the land, places where we labored and built
lives.

There's an old barn on the farm where I live.  Its boards were cut
from nearby trees and its corrugated roof is rusting.  Cows last used
it forty years ago.  They rubbed board edges round in the stalls where
they fed.  I paint it and other barns around the area to preserve
remnants of the past and because barns are simply interesting
buildings that tell stories.

Landscapes

Title: Sailing Alone

I created the background by applying a multi-colored wash and let it
dry, washed in transparent colors to suggest clouds, established the
hills using darker washes, and carefully painted the sailboat.




Title: Across the Field

In this painting a light wash of many colors was applied.  Background
trees were suggested using darker values applied wet.  The barn was
painted using a combination of hard and soft edges and a bit of dry
brush.  I completed the painting with foreground spattering.

Title: Hermitage

Here is an example of painting a suggested subject.  I washed in a
light background.  A slanting line and white patch suggested a hill
and cottage, so I developed them using positive and negative painting
techniques.

Title: Color Brew

I penciled in the design, applied a multi-colored wash, then began
painting shapes.  Dry brush, scraping, and small washes define the
shapes.

Vivid Transparent color

Why Not?

Why not take ordinary shapes and interpret them so they take on individuality and life?  The images to the left are cliches, but with some bold strokes they become more vital.
