Landscapes

Title: Sailing Alone

I created the background by applying a multi-colored wash and let it
dry, washed in transparent colors to suggest clouds, established the
hills using darker washes, and carefully painted the sailboat.

Title: Across the Field

In this painting a light wash of many colors was applied. Background
trees were suggested using darker values applied wet. The barn was
painted using a combination of hard and soft edges and a bit of dry
brush. I completed the painting with foreground spattering.

Title: Hermitage

Here is an example of painting a suggested subject. I washed in a
light background. A slanting line and white patch suggested a hill
and cottage, so I developed them using positive and negative painting
techniques.

Title: Color Brew

I penciled in the design, applied a multi-colored wash, then began
painting shapes. Dry brush, scraping, and small washes define the
shapes.

Why Not?

Why not take ordinary shapes and interpret them so they take on individuality and life?  The images to the left are cliches, but with some bold strokes they become more vital.

Wild Washes

This quickly done watercolor pops from the imagination.  I played with colors and used infused washes  (color introduced into wet shapes--always more pigment and less water as you proceed).  Play with shapes.  See what materializes.

No Mortgage

Wander.  Wander and you sometimes discover something the earth is reclaiming and that you can claim as an artist too.  Sketch it.  Paint it.  Keep a great memory.

Blue River

This watercolor was painted from a sketch done in the Methow Valley.  I was playing with a variety of blues, experimenting with lost and found edges.

A Little Spring

This close up watercolor study illustrates that a world of subjects is right at our feet.  Instead of looking at a sunset, I look at a picket fence and spring flowers weaving through boards.

Painting on hardboard

I am enjoying painting watercolors on new surfaces--canvas, gessoed hardboard and clayboard.  The canvas needs to be wiped off with water before starting.  The hardboard needs to be swabbed off with rubbing alcohol.  Paint with these surfaces flat.  Correct mistakes by wiping them clean.  When the painting is done, seal it with archival acrylic spray applied in three layers (horizontally, vertically, horizontally), allowing the spray to dry between each application.
